It's my first day as an intern and I'm so bored! I just entered 1300 lines of stuff into an excell sheet. How do you keep the boredom at bay?

if you have work, do the work, if not go for a walk or go on oppo

Lots of Oppo, Reddit ( justrolledintotheshop, techsupportgore, techsupportmcguyver, MR2, Talesfromtechsupport, PCMasterRace), teaching myself how to program, designing web sites, creating start ups. The usual.
Oh, and congratulations. You made it.

You're an intern if you're lucky only 95% of your job will be tedious boring stuff, the other 5% MIGHT be something cool. Excel is rough, when I work on sales reports my brain is just completely dead by the end of the day. However, that internship is one of your best bets for getting a job after graduation. Kick major ass, show initiative, and don't be afraid to ask questions or ask to be involved with a project you're interested in. Even if it's just doing more excel entry for that project. Just out of curiosity, what type of company/internship is it?

Seriously, music. What's oppo listening to today?

i still haven't figured it out besides OPPO. Been turning wrenches/AC biz since I was 15... now, desk stuff :'(

Congrats on the new job!

Drugs.
By which I mean caffeine ... yeah.

excellent advice.

I've interned before, and it's all about making a good impression and networking. Granted, my current job isn't the result of an internship. But both my big boy jobs I've had since graduating were because of people I knew, and my current company hires on a lot of our interns. If you can create a solid relationship that will turn into a full-time position after school and save you the torment that is job hunting, that would be a fantastic thing. Seriously, job hunting is the worst thing ever. Especially with the current job market, and a crap degree like Poli Sci... lol ;)

listen to pandora all day

Getting up and taking walks every once in a while keeps my muscles from succumbing to atrophy.

I've been cranking some "Tonight Alive" today. Think Paramore before the industry ruined them. (damn I sounded hipster/music snob right there...gross...I need a shower.)

With some of that white powdery drugy substance mixed in...
You know...
Sugar.

The answer to your question I have been searching for since I left college and got a "real" job. I am afraid that answer does not exist.

Congratulations on the internship! Great route to job/career (read: money) later on. What works for me: iPod (doesn't kill my phone battery) with a library you love. If the task is boring or tedious, either see how fast you can get it done (punk soundtrack works for me) and show how much ass you kick in speed/precision entry, or end-run it and write a quick script in, e.g. Python, to take the data and export it in XLS, or CSV and then import/convert in Excel.

No worries, I like my fair share of indie rock, popularity changes artists. I need to listen to some Paramore, I've always heard good things about them.

This^^^ Oh god this^^^ for sure.

Oh, I was thinking of the more powdery substance... creamer.
![]() 06/02/2014 at 12:09 |

Really good if you start at the beginning. Tonight Alive is really good. I saw them live as an opener for Taking Back Sunday and The Used a few months ago. I have not turned off their pandora station since and I finally broke down and got their 2 most recent albums last night.

They have a female lead singer, right? That's part of why I enjoy Metric so much, so I think I'll like them. Once this album finishes I'll start on their first album.
![]() 06/02/2014 at 12:11 |

Yes, so does Tonight Alive. For some reason "punk"ish music these days with a female lead just sounds great, I've had good luck with Icon Fire too I believe is the name of the band, similar situation

I'm rocking this currently

I'm pretty sure all of us mindless bastards in cubicles are why pandora is in business.
![]() 06/02/2014 at 12:14 |

Well creamer could go either way... sometimes you need to inject the liquid form of creamer directly into the coffee... but the powder version is just as fun.
![]() 06/02/2014 at 12:29 |
|
I've been sticking to powder lately, it isn't quite the same as a good ol' DI creamer.

Soon, you'll be really good at looking like you're busy.

They are an Austrian(?) company that makes tube based things for auto makers and auto suppliers. Things like Mercedes M-class air suspension bits, VAG seat belt components, and airbag canisters.

Nice. Sounds pretty similar to the company I work for. Except we make parts for/rebuild gearboxes for everything from passenger cars, to buses, to wind turbines, to tractors, and more. Also, my company is German not Austrian. lol

That's what I'm doing right now! It seems to be working. I finished my work two hours ago and my boss has been in a meeting.

I'm just surprisingly good at getting my work done quickly and I don't know what to do with my spare time.

great! you and I can hang here or on FB during the day. #boredbork@work

![]() 06/02/2014 at 12:57 |

For Gods sake don't let them find out you are good at it and efficient! I got promoted quickly because of that. I'm in my new job now and I just match the standard. Of course I screw around for most of the time (Oppo and such), and bang out in an hour what most take all day to do....

You should try shoes. Not wearing them, just trying them on.
![]() 06/02/2014 at 13:01 |

I haven't done anything since 10:30.
![]() 06/02/2014 at 13:41 |

What do you think I've been doing all day?
I can count four times today when I started a new tab to do something and clicked Jalopnik/Oppo under most visited out of habit.

Keep Up The Good Work!!!! Does it at least look like you are busy? That is the key. I always used to run around with a clipboard or now with my company phone out (Not actually looking at it even) and seem serious or thinking about something. Then everyone thinks you are busy. If they bother you they either don't care (ie The boss) or are as big (or Bigger) of a slacker as you.

Every now and then I change pages on my computer (I sit at my bosses desk) and look longingly at some spread sheets. It seems to work because my streak today was 4 hours of doing nothing.

I read this earlier today and couldn't believe how stupid I was to forget them. Thanks for reminding me.

I expect you have headphones today.
I was sent these as a xmas present this year and the only word I can use to describe them is EPIC:
http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Mode-M…
They are discontinued by Klipsch, I can't imagine what the newer upgraded ones sound like.d
![]() 06/03/2014 at 18:08 |

I did remember them. They made typing in pages of crap into the computer doable.

good choice.
makes the world better, hopefully you get some good ones
